Why did you choose homeopathy?

I became very disillusioned with conventional medicine, through personal experience, and by seeing the damaging side effects of certain medications on my own young children. I realised there must be a safer way of dealing with one’s health, without having to contend with the toxic side effects of pharmaceutical drugs. I do however recognize that there is a time and a place for allopathy, but recommend that its use is as minimal as possible, if this is possible. I strongly recommend the route of prevention of disease through a nutritious diet and a balanced lifestyle, which includes cultivating a healthy mind set and achieving satisfaction through fulfilment of our life’s purpose.

Homeostasis, defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as such:

The tendency towards a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially maintained by physiological processes.

I have always advocated this, so homeopathy for me was a natural progression, once I could dedicate the time to devote to its study.

Homeopathic Studies

I have a background in holistic therapies in many disciples and an Arts Degree (BA Hons. European literature, French.)

Homeopathically, I graduated from Purton House/University of West London (UK) in 2009, after undertaking a degree in homeopathy (BSc Hons, First Class.)

After a move to Canada, I completed a “Special Advanced Graduate Program’ tailored uniquely for me at The Ontario College of Homeopathic Medicine, https://www.ochm.ca/ graduating in 2010.

Modules here included extensive supervised clinic hours and a serious focus on physical examination of a patient, taught by an eminent Medical Doctor. The homeopathic approach to treatment, as well as the allopathic were covered, which was helpful in seeing medical conditions from both aspects, from aetiology through to ‘cure.’

I live part of the time in Toronto, Canada and am a member of the advisory board for The Applied Research in Homeopathy Foundation in Canada (http://arhfc.ca/).

Treatment Approach

I work for myself, seeing patients on a regular basis and take great satisfaction in being part of their healing journey. I am a Classical homeopath, and wherever possible treat with the single remedy, constitutionally. I recognise however, that this is not always possible, but for the most part, I stick to a pure, philosophically appropriate homeopathic approach. I have great difficulty in understanding polypharmacy in homeopathy; it is simply not in keeping with any of the fundamental tenets. I see it as potentially as harmful as polypharmacy in conventional medicine and this surely has to be the case; homeopathic remedy’s are powerful, why confuse and muddle a case with remedy’s that have not been ‘proven together? Potential long term chaos within the body could be the result.

Cases & Specialities

I have success in treatment with the following conditions:

  • Depression/Anxiety

  • Abuse, both physical and emotional

  • Female conditions (the bulk of my work) from menstrual issues through to menopausal imbalances,

  • Ovarian cysts,

  • Fibroids, endometriosis etc.

  • Pregnancy, birth, helping with conception problems, through homeopathic treatment.

  • Eye conditions

  • Bone/Joint conditions, (including osteoporosis.)

  • Children’s health

Many other conditions have been treated, however the above is a fair overview of many of my patients presenting problems.

Being a Hahnemannian homeopath, I stick as close as I can to the questions Hahnemann sets out in The Organon, clearly with my own unique style, with a focus on making the patient feel comfortable, which is invaluable for taking a good case. I am acutely sensitive as a homeopath, which gives me the ability to ‘feel’ the emotions of a patient and what they are trying to convey.

The integration of homeopathy with conventional medicine

I am a strong advocate of integrating homeopathy with conventional medicine, should this be required, mostly to minimize iatrogenic disease, which is escalating exponentially to dangerous levels.

To clarify this point, I cite a section from one of my own articles:

Why Less Really is more and why Hahnemann was right, available at: http://hpathy.com/homeopathy-papers/why-less-really-is-more-and-why-hahnemann-was-right/2/

The intelligent, thinking, health aware, person of the 21st century has had enough. A pervading sense of disillusionment with prescription drugs and their potentially devastating side effects is rippling through a society that is beginning to realise that maybe it has been duped (slowly but surely) by pharmaceutical companies whose primary concern is to make a profit at any cost. The drug companies in America have for several years now been permitted to advertise directly to the public through the media-on television and radio. These commercials are invariably subliminal, with beautiful images of a perfect life (particularly with reference to antidepressants.) Some people however, may miss the sad irony of one minute’s advertising of the product to at least three minutes on the side effects of any given drug. These side effects, in this case of SSRI antidepressants, are insomnia, skin rashes, headaches, joint and muscle pain, stomach upset, nausea or diarrhea; discounting the possible sexual effects such as impotence and the raised risk of suicide.

They are invariably treated with yet another prescription drug, and so the cycle continues, and the profits soar.

It is time to wake up. One of the leading causes of death in the western world is manmade; it comes from the proliferation of pharmaceutical drugs being prescribed by doctors legally.

It accounts for 783,936 deaths every year, in the USA alone. It is evident that the American medical system is the leading cause of death and injury in the United States.

It is extremely rare that any doctor would knowingly wish to cause harm. It is more an absence of training and education in holistic medicine, nutrition and basic lifestyle advice which is generating the new ‘drug culture’, clearly becoming endemic in the new millennium. Also, the ever pervasive influence of large pharmaceutical companies, where truth and morality are often not identifiable qualities. The essence of The Hippocratic Oath, continues to be ‘Do no harm’ (from the Latin ‘primum non nocere); how wonderful it would be if this was, finally, taken seriously. We as homeopaths can undoubtedly help in making this become a reality through constitutional treatment and lifestyle advice such as has been discussed.

I feel that it is our responsibility as health care professionals, to help educate our patients as much as possible, as to the management of their own health. Surely, it is right to see medicine evolving through educating the public in prevention and healthy lifestyle habits rather than waiting until chronic disease occurs, often due to the very procedures and treatments that they are supposed to cure. It would be truly progressive to witness the advent of more integrative health clinics, advocating and promoting CAM therapies such as homeopathy, naturopathy, and nutritional support.

This would involve educating conventional doctors extensively in not just the management of disease through prescription drugs and surgery, but in the empowerment of their patients.

Publications/Articles

I love to write (both creatively and professionally) and tailor this passion for writing to contribute my thoughts/advice to journals and organisations where I can hopefully help to spread knowledge about homeopathy to homeopaths and the general public.

Several of my articles can be found here: http://hpathy.com/author/gill-graham/

Since the beginning of 2016 I have been writing a monthly blog for Homeopathy Worked for me, which is a UK concern, involving the promotion of homeopathy, both in the UK and worldwide; Article/blog posts written by me for this site have included

Article/blog posts

  • “Balance and Homeostasis,”

  • “Remedies for a broken heart,”

  • “The Homeopathic and holistic approach to Depression and most recently,”

  • “The homeopathic Principles” (divided into 4.)

All can be found here: http://news.findahomeopath.org.uk/ and http://hpathy.com/

Homeopathy Worked for Me

Homeopathy Worked for Me’ operates as a result of ‘4Homeopathy’ which is a ‘collaboration of the main stakeholders within the UK homeopathy profession. Its primary purpose is to develop and maintain a united communication strategy which raises public awareness of the many benefits that homeopathy can bring to health and wellbeing.’

This wonderful website allows the general public to type in their post code and find a homeopath in their area. It also has up to date information on homeopathy and features successful cases and leading personalities who all use homeopathy.

The future of homeopathy in the UK/Registering Bodies

Even in the wake of fanatical sceptisim by institutions or people of often dubious repute, 10% of people in the UK continue to use homeopathy, an estimated 6 million people. There are over 400 doctors in the UK that use homeopathy, regulated by the Faculty of Homeopathy and promoted by the British Homeopathic Association. In the NHS (National Health Service) approx. 40,000 homeopathic prescriptions are provided to patients per year by doctors working within the homeopathic service.

There were originally 5 homeopathic hospitals (Glasgow, Liverpool, London, Bristol and Tunbridge Wells). Tunbridge Wells closed in 2007 and in 2010, the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital changed its name to the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine. There are more than 1,500 professional homeopaths (non-medically qualified homeopaths) in the UK, regulated by the:

  1. Society of Homeopaths (65%), http://www.homeopathy-soh.org/

  2. Alliance of Registered Homeopaths http://www.a-r-h.org/

  3. Homeopathic Medical Association http://www.the-hma.org/

They largely operate in private practice outside the NHS. In addition, there are many vets that use homeopathy as an integral part of their practice.

Randomised controlled trials,

Clinical outcome studies and observational studies are ongoing via

The Clinical Outcome Research in Homeopathy data base (CORE-hom). http://www.carstens-stiftung.de/core-hom/login.php

It currently comprises over 1015 clinical trials in homeopathy and is updated regularly as new trials are completed. (Source: Homeopathy Research Institute.)

In addition, there are many other research projects continuously being performed throughout the world by a variety of eminent institutions.

I can only speak from my own personal point of view here, and I feel it is important to be optimistic with regards to the future of homeopathy in the UK. Research (as has been discussed above) is ongoing and is developing and expanding all the time. We are fortunate to have a Royal family that extol the virtues of homeopathic medicine.

The Queen's physician Dr Peter Fisher has recently called for homeopathy to be prescribed alongside conventional medicine, stressing how NHS doctors have to rid themselves of their bias (ignorance?) of complimentary therapies.

Dr Fisher, is also Clinical Director and Director of Research at The Royal London Hospital of Integrated Medicine states that homeopathy is ‘safe, popular and reduced the need for antibiotics.

‘Writing in the BMJ, he referred to several studies that showed integrating homeopathy with conventional medicines led to better patient outcomes and the reduced use of potentially hazardous drugs (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/health/news/11739270/Queens-physician-calls-for-more-homeopathy-on-NHS.html).

I see integration to be a key word with reference to ‘where we go from here.” Integration of our societies and registering bodies via 4Homeopathy and through the work of

This can only make us stronger and communication easier, inwardly, amongst ourselves, and outwardly to our patients and the media.

Integrating natural and conventional medicine in doctors surgeries and hospitals is also what I would like to see; all the time, which would involve educating conventional medics further in nutrition and natural medicines, also making it crystal clear how dangerous some pharmaceutical drugs are, alone, but particularly when combined.

Interesting here to be talking about integration. From what I can understand, this is one of Anjas objectives for PROHOM, to unite homeopaths throughout the Europe and The World. This, has been the purpose of our introductions here, so thank you for reading my views, and I, in turn, am interested in yours and to see how homeopathy operates in your countries.

THANK YOU!

Thank you for so many links - hints & inspirations.

PROHOM readers and me, have to thank.

It is our pleasure !
